There are two sides to cloud security: the tenant and the provider. At the moment, it appears from both perspectives that cloud computing is using bolt-ons to create a sense of security. This is more perception than reality. Perception is what is preventing cloud adoption. What does this perception mean? Are clouds really using bolt-on technologies?

Everyone wants visibility into their hybrid cloud of all resources and subsystems. We have expounded upon this need over the years as well as on how to gain some level of visibility. The tools exist, as do the methodologies. What we need now is better observability. Visibility is inherent in many tools today, but observability is not. There is one observed basis in every tool to the visible data; we need to go past that to gain better insights.
We have written before about HyTrust and its growing ecosystem of partners, but now HyTrust has acquired HighCloud Security, a provider of encryption and key management for the virtual and IaaS environments. HyTrust provides control and visibility into actions by virtualization administrators within a VMware vSphere or vCloud environment. With the acquisition of HighCloud Security, HyTrust now adds data privacy to its suite of tools. Initially, HighCloud Security’s encryption and key management will be separate products, but there are many ways in which the technologies can be combined. The purchase changes HyTrust’s unique stance in the industry.
