Desktone v5 angling to hook Service Providers from Citrix’s FlexCast

desktone100x30Just in case Citrix doesn’t have anything to talk about next week at their San Francisco Synergy, Desktone release v5.0 of their Desktop-As-A-Service platform. Previous releases focused on delivering a VDI environment (i.e. instances of hosted desktop  OSes): with the v5.0 release, Desktone have architected a platform to allow resellers and service providers to deliver and support heterogeneous end user-environments. With a  Desktone v5 platform, it is possible to deliver:

•    Hosted Full-Featured VDI:  to allow delivery of a desktop OS that replicates the experience of a physical Windows or Linux desktop. Continue reading Desktone v5 angling to hook Service Providers from Citrix’s FlexCast

VMware View gets performance boost

After leaving many of the VDI crowd feeling unloved during the vSphere launch announcement, VMware has more than made amends with the pre-announcement of new PCoIP performance enhancements that will ship in VMware View 5.0.

One of the reduced criticisms of View, and one of the most frequent weapons used against it, has been the relatively poor performance characteristics of PCoIP across high latency low bandwidth WAN connections. Until today, VMware has been following the standard line of denying there is a problem until you are able to solve it. Now, solution in hand Vittorio Viarengo, VMware’s head of all things desktop (officially Vice President, End User Computing)is willing to share Gartner’s perspective on View’s strengths and weaknesses. Ericom’s HTML5 client for VMware View

I have to admit that it came as a bit of a surprise to see Ericom beating Citrix, VMware, et al to the punch last week by shipping the beta release of its HTML5-based RDP client, before any of the bigger vendors opened up their offerings to public scrutiny. I’ll be looking at the operation of Ericom’s HTML5 client in more depth next week, but first we need to understand why anyone would be interested in deploying a HTML5-based remote desktop client at all. Save lives, implement VDI

Everyone living in the Northeastern United States has been victim of some of the most significant snowfall in recent history. There is more snow, icy rain and sleet than we know what to do with. Every day my neighbors and I are out clearing off driveways and walkways so we can get to our cars and head out to work, only to be met with slick on and off-ramps, narrowed streets and a continuous bombardment of slush from the vehicles in front of us. What is most frightening to me is the increase in heart attack deaths that are reported from people after they have shoveled large amounts of snow.

SnowThe American Heart Association warns that people should take extreme precautions when shoveling snow. See this article on Winter Weather Tips published by the AHA. Basically what happens is the heart rate and blood pressure increase while shoveling snow. That, coupled with the body’s natural reflex to constrict arteries and blood vessels when exposed to the cold and a buildup of lactic acid, can lead to a heart attack in those who are at risk.

Business owners, you and your company can help reduce these events from occurring by implementing policies, processes, and tools for your employees to stay at home and still work effectively. Continue reading Save lives, implement VDI
