In my Enterprise Desktop Strategy paper that was released back in September 2009, I defined what organizations should be considering as they look to incorporate desktop virtualization into their environments. I explored the different components, processes, and tools that brought the concept of the enterprise desktop together. Four years have gone by, and we have been through several “year of VDI” hype cycles. What we have learned is that as much as Desktop Virtualization is an innovative solution, it can also be disruptive if it is not properly integrated as part of the whole desktop service.

The east coast is experiencing the tail end of a very large storm named ‘Sandy’. We all had plenty of time to prepare for the storm, but did we? Individually, we probably did, but what about our data? Those 24/7 critical processes to allow our customers to view and respond to the data our organizations provide? We were lucky—we had no issues during the storm, but now we await issues during storm clean up. So how do you prepare for such disasters? Do you move to the cloud?
Oh dear. Did I get it wrong. Three weeks ago I asked “What does the future hold for Quest vWorkspace?“, where I described vWorkspace (at that time unaccountably renamed Quest Workspace Desktop Virtualization) as being “no more than an unwelcome distraction” and suggested that the best thing for Dell to do, at least as far as the product was concerned, would be to sell it off to VMware or Teradici. Well, it looks like Dell can’t have taken my suggestion seriously, because this week vWorkspace is back!
If one thing was evident from VMworld San Francisco was that Dell, despite its advances in desktop virtualization, has a problem on its hands – What should it do with Quest vWorkspace.
In the face of declining PC revenues and slowing storage sales VMworld San Francisco saw the launch of two new Wyse P Class Zero Clients, two new EqualLogic hybrid storage arrays and three new reference architectures optimized for VMware View, signaling a clear intent from Dell that it is getting serious about VDI.
According to Bloomberg News Dell is in discussions to acquire Quest Software in a bid to strengthen its enterprise software services portfolio. Dell has been shopping, with five acquisitions announced so far this year, to add software, computer storage and networking gear to its lineup of PCs, which account for 52% of its sales. With PC sales flat and margins thin, Dell has been seeking to broaden its services portfolio and directly challenge HP which has suffered multiple missteps in recent months.
