So, the key value associated with Unidesk is its layering technology. The reason for this is that it enables customers to have VDI deployments and not be consumed with worry to the same degree as are most shops that have persistent VDI instances (VDI VMs assigned to one user that are always available and always for that user specifically). It allows for non-persistent VDI VMs—the Holy Grail, for lack of a better term—for all VDI deployment scenarios. One golden image, which is deployed to users on demand.

Atlantis Computing have released the first in-memory storage solution for persistent VDI. Setting aside the remoted experience, peripheral support, licensing and off-line access – the most nemesising nemesis for VDI is hardware scale. A major hardware limiting factor is storage performance.
In a transition from physical PCs to virtual work spaces you can move 50,1000,20,000 people from an environment where everyone has their own hard drive in their own device, to a shared environment where there are (hopefully) no longer 50,1000,20,000 hard-drives. You do this to achieve cost savings. Still, in the majority of instances, the desktop file system and the apps that run on it weren’t designed to understand such consolidation. Many a desktop project fails because the storage infrastructure wasn’t architected with these mismatches in mind.
Yet, desktop virtualization solutions have have matured to accommodate such issues. A range of increasingly impressive VDI appliances: dedicated drive arrays. Way back in 2010 we were reporting that Atlantis Computing were looking to Transform Desktop Computing with their In Line Image and Optimization (ILIO) product. Atlantis Computing’s core ILIO product sought to address optimizing non-persistent VDI instances, then offered a RAM based solution with their ILIO DiskLess VDI, then presented a way to optimize Citrix XenApp instances. Atlantis’ offerings look to dramatically reduce the physical hardware required to support virtualized desktop infrastructures.
And now to their portfolio, Atlantis Computing add ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0. Some early stability issues aside, Atlantis have developed a strong and supportive market and expanded on it. What is in this release? If 2013 is to be the year of VDI – how does ILIO Persistent VDI 4.0 help? Importantly, will Atlantis Computing’s ILIO Persistent VDI change the game?
A common difficulty when transforming user workspaces is how to accommodate the unique, the different, the individual. A commonality between users is their desire to be different. A number of vendors provide tools to decouple components of user workspaces, to provide for personalisation within a standard environment. This provides cost savings by allowing core standardisation, while reducing the impact on the user to change their working practices – allowing them to be as productive as possible. Still, keeping an individual’s settings persistent is all very well, how do you accommodate individual user’s applications?
Liquidware have announced the availability of the latest release of their user virtualization and profile management solution ProfileUnity. ProfileUnity v5.0. now includes FlexApp, providing the ability not only to have settings persistent across sessions, but self-installed applications too. Allowing user installed applications is often cited as being an enabler for wider VDI/DaaS adoption. Liquidware’s enhancement allows them to join the likes of AppSense and Citrix in providing such functionality.
Some may argue that allowing users unstructured access to install applications is what leads to high management costs. Some may argue that the user access rights required to deliver this service are all important. Are “User Installed Apps” truly important? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man. O, be some other name? How does Liquidware’s flexing of its innovative muscle stand v5.0 out?
