In my last article, I mused on VDI—sorry, I mean EUC. What could have besmirched the fine name of VDI so much that it had to undergo a radical marketing overhaul? Yes, I know that EUC is much more than VDI, but most people still refer to EUC as VDI, especially outside of the ivory tower of Silicon Valley.
There has long been a debate about testing products within a virtual environment. Not just on how, but the why as well as the what to test. There are limits in some EULA’s as well on the reporting of such testing. This was the subject of the 7/25 Virtualization Security Podcast (#112 – Virtualization Security Roundtable) held Live from NSS Labs in Austin, TX. Where we delved into the issues of testing within a virtual environment. While at Interop, I participated in a Tech Field Day event where Spirent was talking about their new Axon product, as well as the possibility of usage of Blitz.io. It was an interesting discussion but it gave me some food for thought. As we move to cloud scale apps based on platforms such as Pivotal (EMC World was just down the street), OpenShift, and others, we need a way to test those applications at scale. Over the last few weeks I have been struggling with automating deployment and testing of virtual desktops for my own edification. This struggle has pointed out automation weaknesses which need to be addressed for automation and the software defined data center to succeed and to not only be deployed from software, but also to be self-healing and all the great things we associate with SDDC, SDN, etc. But current automation has some serious flaws and weaknesses.
