Who or what is EUC? In an industry plagued by TLAs (three-letter acronyms), EUC, or end-user computing, is the new nomenclature for VDI, or virtual desktop infrastructure. This is not just the emperor’s new clothes, but a redefinition of the paradigm of adopting a more inclusive view of the software, hardware, and processes that shore up the client side of corporate infrastructure.
If your users require a great experience and not just a good one, then the long-awaited Framehawk release from Citrix is going to be a hit among them. While the first release of Framehawk technologies occurred at the end of June as part of the XenApp/XenDesktop Feature Pack 2 release and only supported Windows devices via Citrix Receiver 4.3, the iOS version was released this week.
At first glance, it looks like VMware’s recently announced Horizon 6 platform is an admission by VMware that applications, rather than desktops, do matter, and that Citrix has been on the right track all along. Certainly, XenApp has been a thorn in the side of many VMware View implementations through the years, allowing people to deliver applications to solve problems that View could only solve by throwing more desktops at them. XenApp has always, for all its problems, offered a simple way to host and distribute applications to a wide variety of user devices.
In March 2013, Citrix announced they had GPU sharing working and available for XenApp (multi-user/RDS). In December 2013, they announced it was available for XenDesktop (multi-OS/VDI). This has been a major barrier to adoption for many companies that need the ability to deliver a high-end multimedia experience to their end users in order to gain acceptance for adoption.
