The Software Defined Data Center

DataCenterVirtualizationThe Software Defined Data Center: That was pretty much the biggest takeaway from this year’s VMworld in San Francisco. VMware made announcements about the new vSAN that will be coming out soon to enhance software defined storage and about the NSX platform that addresses one of the final hurdles on the path to finally having a completely software defined datacenter, network virtualization. There have been plenty of write-ups on these topics, including one very good post from one of my colleges, Bernd Harzog. I am not going to go into any details on those announcements except to say that VMware is expanding and putting themselves in a good position to be the center of the virtual universe. I believe that it will take some time for software defined networking to really take off. My gut is telling me that it will be a slower process at first, just like the adoption of server virtualization, but when it does really take off, I believe the end result will have the potential to have just as great or even a greater legacy than server virtualization has. Hotlink’s Cross-Platform Management Technology

DataCenterVirtualizationOne of the companies and technologies to watch is Hotlink with its Cross-Platform Management Technology (winner of Best of Show, VMworld 2012). If you have not heard of this before, I think you will in the near future. This technology allows you to use VMware’s vCenter Server to manage and control all major hypervisors and public clouds to include VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (KVM), CloudStack, and Amazon EC2, all from within VMware vCenter. RackSpace calls Citrix’s Bluff over CloudStack. Citrix Folds.

CloudComputingCitrix has given up Project Olympus which was based on the Open Source OpenStack platform in favor of its own Open Source CloudStack initiative (formerly known as Cloud.com), which it is contributing to the Apache foundation and has re-licensed under the partner-friendly Apache Open Source license (rather than the GPL). News: Citrix Acquires Cloud.com

Citrix has purchased Cloud.com and this poses some interesting changes to the overall virtualization and cloud markets. One also has to wonder about the timing of the announcement to coincide with the same day as the big announcements coming out of VMware. I see this purchase as a mixed blessing to the market place, but also a renewal for Citrix. Continue reading News: Citrix Acquires Cloud.com
