Legacy first and second generation APM tools have failed to keep up with customer requirements. These tools need to be replaced with modern third generation APM tools that have been modernized for today’s development and deployment paradigms. These tools are also a critical part of the process of virtualizing business critical applications.
VMware has articulated and is starting to deliver on a compelling strategy of Automated Operations for its virtualization and cloud platforms. This will precipitate profound changes in the vendor ecosystem as third party vendors partner up and acquire in order to come up with the same depth of functionality that VMware is offering, but on a broader set of platforms (Quest buying VKernel is just the start of this process).
With vFabric APM VMware has announced a compelling entry into the APM space, joining the current set of APM innovators – New Relic, AppDynamics, BlueStripe, dynaTrace and ExtraHop. The innovations that VMware is bringing to the table will usher in a redefinition of what APM is, from a performance and availability tool for the development team, to a strategic applications management platform that enables price/performance comparison shopping by application owners. Once the price/performance features are fully implemented, this may do more to enable performance sensitive applications to move to public clouds than any other thing that VMware has done.
The focus upon sharing real response time and transaction load data by SalesForce.com is notable when compared with the pre-historic approach to performance that is used by many cloud vendors (and for a matter of fact many enterprise IT organizations). Response Time correlates directly to end user experience and at the end of the day that is all that matters. Hopefully the industry will learn from SalesForce.com and advance this concept further.
The news today is that Compuware has acquired dynaTrace. This is an extremely significant development as this is the first example of one of the “traditional” systems management vendors (IBM, HP, CA, BMC, Compuware, Quest), stepping up their game to acquire one of these new innovators that address these new use cases and requirements.
BMC has acquired Coradiant the leader in web applications performance management. Now it remains to be seen if BMC will follow up this step with additional steps to create a modern monitoring stack suited for virtualization and the cloud, or if BMC will under-utilize Coradiant’s assets by simply integrating Coradiant with its legacy systems management framework.
