The OpenStack Summit this week continued to fan the flames of the software-defined data center. The software-defined data center is just a term for replacing traditional data center hardware functionality with the same features implemented in software, running on commodity x86 servers. While software-defined approaches to data center features are at least nominally less expensive than their hardware counterparts the real promise in the approach is flexibility and management ease with high levels of integration. Reconfiguring a network to support the security requirements of a new application is now just a function of software and APIs. Expanding storage is just simply adding another node with more storage attached, and the cluster compensates automatically. Even things like firewall rules and load balancer configurations can now be stored as templates along with the applications, to be provisioned in minutes. Gaming as a Service: When we talk about cloud computing systems, we may be mainly focusing on Platform, Infrastructure, Software, and Network as a Service as the main and common areas that are presented to us, but there is another area to watch as it gets a stronger foothold into the cloud. That newcomer is Gaming as a Service (GaaS). GaaS is not really new, and if you have ever been on Facebook you know there are a lot of games available that are running in the cloud already, but since the start of 2013, we are seeing more and more cloud focus from the traditional game manufactures, pushing their future products and services into the cloud. There is a dilemma for all tenants of a public or private cloud: Scope. Tenants want everything to be in scope. Cloud Service Providers (CSP) want to limit scope to the bare minimum. What does it mean for a Cloud to be ‘PCI Compliant’, and why is this a requirement for some tenants? The real issue is, what is in scope for PCI-DSS while your data is in the cloud, and how can you as the tenant meet those requirements? Remember, in the cloud, scope becomes a huge issue and a dilemma for the tenant, mainly because they may not know the scope of the cloud provider’s audit and may never find it out. So what is this scope issue and can it be fixed?
