Hosting.com has done a survey of over 500 companies on their cloud and virtualization usage patterns, plans and concerns. The report concludes that in the next 12 months, there will be a fundamental and measurable shift in how companies view and utilize cloud-based solutions.
Investment Drivers for Cloud Computing
The first question involved the most important factors driving investment in cloud computing. The answer is that Cost, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) and Flexibility are the main drivers for these investments. The answers are summarized in the chart below:
Obstacles to Cloud Computing
It should come as no surprise that Security for shared environments topped the list. However Security was followed by concerns over Integration with Existing Infrastructure, and Performance Management issues.
Current Environment for Virtualization and Private Clouds
In a great surprise 47% of respondents to the survey are already over 25% virtualized. Not surprisingly, only 14% are however over 75% virtualized. Another interesting surprise is that 78% of large companies already have a private cloud, or intend to put one in.
