Customers’s using PaaS Cloud offerings like Heroku are clearly reliant upon both Heroku and partnering monitoring vendors like New Relic to provide complete information about PaaS Cloud Application Performance. Being fully transparent in this regard is likely to prove to be both a technical and a business challenges for the PaaS cloud vendors.
The arms race to make it easy for one cloud vendor to onboard workloads from another vendor has been started by GoGrid and Racemi. This will likely lead to a world where it is easy to move workloads around between private clouds and public clouds of various types. If this happens then we are headed towards a world where execution environments for applications will compete on a limited set of dimensions like application response time, required throughput, cost, and required security level. If and when this occurs, then in fact IT will have become “a service”.
SDDC Operations Management is going to require a new approach. Vendors with effective Operations Management solutions for today’s virtualized data centers are in the best position to be able to expand their offerings for the SDDC. Legacy vendors face a complete rewrite of their products and the adoption of a new business model (easy to try and easy to buy) that will destroy them financially, and will therefore be unable to react to the SDDC either technically or financially.
The SDDC and the Cloud are going to require a new SDDC Management Stack that will need to be based upon a multi-vendor big data datastore. There will likely be on-premise and cloud hosted version of these datastores. Splunk, VMware, New Relic, The Pivotal Initiative, CloudPhysics, AppNeta, and Boundary are all excellent hypothetical suppliers of such a datastore.

Public cloud vendors do not measure what they need to measure in order to be able to provide infrastructure performance assurances to their customers. This is why their SLA’s are useless. This is why if you put your application in a public cloud your absolutely need to measure its response time with a cloud application performance management solution.
