The Virtualization Practice

Performance Management

Performance Management covers monitoring the physical infrastructure, the virtual infrastructure and applications for end-to-end performance and service levels. It covers Application Performance Management, Infrastructure Performance Management, Operations Management, Capacity Planning, and Capacity Management. ...
Environments covered include Virtualization Performance Management, Software Defined Data Center Performance Management, and Cloud Performance Management. Key issues include ensuring the performance of virtualized and cloud based data centers, ensuring the performance of software defined data centers (SDDC performance management), ensuring virtualized application performance, cloud application performance, and SDDC application performance. Key vendors covered include VMware, AppDynamics, AppEnsure, AppFirst, AppNeta, Astute Networks, Aternity, BlueStripe, Boundary, Cirba, CloudPhysics, Correlsense, Compuware, Dell, Embotics, ExtraHop, GigaMon, Hotlink, HP, Intigua, ManageEngine, New Relic, Prelert, Puppet Labs, Riverbed, Splunk, Tintri, Virtual Instruments, Virtustream, VMTurbo, Xangati, and Zenoss.

SDDC Operations Management is going to require a new approach. Vendors with effective Operations Management solutions for today’s virtualized data centers are in the best position to be able to expand their offerings for the SDDC. Legacy vendors face a complete rewrite of their products and the adoption of a new business model (easy to try and easy to buy) that will destroy them financially, and will therefore be unable to react to the SDDC either technically or financially.

The SDDC and the Cloud are going to require a new SDDC Management Stack that will need to be based upon a multi-vendor big data datastore. There will likely be on-premise and cloud hosted version of these datastores. Splunk, VMware, New Relic, The Pivotal Initiative, CloudPhysics, AppNeta, and Boundary are all excellent hypothetical suppliers of such a datastore.

Microsoft has announced that it will offer System Center Advisor for free to its customers in supporting countries. System Center Advisor is a cloud service that enables IT Professionals to proactively avoid problems resulting from server configuration issues. It can help you resolve issues faster by providing access to current and historical configuration data for a deployment. System Center Advisor can also assist in reducing downtime by providing suggestions for improvement and notifying users of key updates specific to their configuration

Public cloud vendors do not measure what they need to measure in order to be able to provide infrastructure performance assurances to their customers. This is why their SLA’s are useless. This is why if you put your application in a public cloud your absolutely need to measure its response time with a cloud application performance management solution.
