AppDynamics, CiRBA, ExtraHop, New Relic, Puppet, SevOne, Splunk, Virtual Instruments, Virtustream, VMware, and VMTurbo have become the new leaders of the new management software industry. These vendors address the new requirements of the software-defined data center and the cloud that are neglected by the blind dinosaur legacy vendors: IBM, BMC, HP, and CA.

I spent two days at PuppetConf 2013 in San Francisco this week, and the common themes were automate everything, monitor everything, provide feedback early in the process, and focus on culture. All four of those topics aligned with the DevOps movement, with the goal of faster and more reliable deliveries. Companies that can deliver software more frequently with fewer issues have a competitive advantage over those who can’t.

The Orchestration and Automation layer of the Software Defined Data Center is where the benefits of the SDDC is translated are translated into working applications for end users and business constituents. Every Cloud Management Platform relies upon either a script or one of these automation frameworks to provision and configure the actual end user services and applications. These solutions represent an opportunity to replace first generation automation management tools and scripts with modern declarative and model based approaches that are much more manageable and scalable.

VMware’s investment of $30M in Puppet Labs, and the partnership between the two companies enables Puppet to disrupt the broader IT automation market and address the specific opportunities for IT Automation in the VMware environment. This puts Puppet Labs in an excellent position to disrupt the legacy automation businesses of IBM, BMC, HP and CA and will ultimately help VMware sell its management stack into the new virtualized and cloud based environments as well.

Cloud based security is about securing the data, yet compliance requirements are often about securing the environment, such as PCI’s requirement for web application firewalls, which protect web servers and perhaps applications and imply protection of data. But they do not directly protect data. How can a Software Defined Data Center implement a form of Software Defined Security automatically to meet not only compliance requirements, but security around a particular mote of data?
