In a world where you are changing everything – by moving applications in whole or in part from physical to virtual, to private cloud and ultimately (at least for some applications) to a public cloud, having an external reference point from which to judge the performance of these applications is essential. That reference point might best be the end user’s workstation, laptop or mobile device. Real User Monitoring solutions are likely to play a prominent role here.
Hosted Virtual Desktop (aka VDI) environments are sufficiently complex and different from either physical desktops or virtualized servers to warrant a dedicated approach to planning and assessing the migration from physical desktops to virtual desktops, and a dedicated approach to monitoring the resulting HDV environment in production.

2010 will be the year that many enterprises confront two very important changes to how they will use server virtualization. The first change is that as VMware vSphere has proven its maturity, performance and scalability enterprises will increasingly put business critical tier applications, at least in part on virtualized platforms. The second change is that at the same time, these very same enterprises will start to evaluate virtualization platforms from other vendors, in particular Hyper-V from Microsoft.

Knoa® Software, the leading provider of end-user experience and performance management software, today announced the availability Knoa Virtual/Cloud Experience Manager (VCEM). VMware has updated its document on Timekeeping in Virtual Machines. This update includes a new mechanism by which vendors of performance management products can accurately measure response times for applications and transactions. This strongly positions vendors like Dynatrace, Optier, Knoa and Aternity to provide transaction performance management solutions in support of the virtualization of business critical applications on the VMware vSphere platform.
