uptime software has made a name for itself by providing a breadth of monitoring functionality across Unix and Windows server platforms, with an easy to use scalable and distributed architecture at an attractive price point. These features have allowed uptime to consistently capture monitoring opportunities against the big four (IBM, HP, CA, BMC) whose offerings are sometimes seen as complex, difficult to implement and maintain, and saddled with onerous licensing and maintenance  policies by cost conscious IT operations executives.

From a virtualization perspective uptime previously supported collecting data from the VMware vCenter API’s, but did not have the kind of VMware specific features that are found in products that focus upon monitoring VMware like those from Vizioncore, Veeam, Akorri, or Virtual Instruments.

On June 24th 2009, uptime announced a major upgrade to its product, up.time 5. up.time 5 adds several important VMware specific capabilities, which collectively put uptime in a strong position to manage complex installations that are comprised of physical and virtual combinations of Windows and Unix servers. These new capabilities include:

Broad Platform Support

Prior to uptime 5.0, enterprises basically had to choose. One the one hand was the choice of product that had broad support for server platforms, middleware and applications, but that lacked deep integration with VMware and therefore the kind of virtualization specific features that a VMware focused solution would offer. On the other hand was a virtualization focused solution like those from Veeam, Vizioncore, Akorri, Reflex Systems, etc. that offer deep integration and analysis of the virtual environment but that don’t really focus upon the physical environment to any great deal. Simple Server Consolidation Reporting

If you have a large physical server environment and are contemplating virtualizating pieces of it,  you are faced with the question of which servers to virtualize in which order. You can buy products that specifically target this need, or if you are an up.time customer you can simply run the server consolidation report that is a free feature of the uptime solution. Incident Characterization and Analysis

One of the tough problems in systems management is how to make the number of bad problems go away over time. This problem starts with being able to triage problems and to characterize them into the ones that are either severe, or frequent enough and long in duration enough so that they are the source of business interruptions. up.time 5 includes a new graph that separates problems by their duration and their frequency. Incident Avoidance through VMware Orchestrator Integration

VMware vCenter Orchestrator® makes building out automated problem avoidance workflows easy, providing advanced capabilities for SMB and Enterprise companies. up.time 5.0 is integrated with Orchestrator so that events and conditions in up.time can trigger complex combinations of workflows and actions in Orchestrator. While this sort of capability has been demonstrated with AppSpeed several times at VMworld conferences, this is the first time that an event in a physical server can be reacted to in a virtual infrastructure. This could prove to be very useful for high transaction business critical applications that may move slowly over to a virtual infrastructure, but where dynamically adding capacity on a virtual infrastructure to a load condition on a physical server would be an elegant solution. An example of the up.time integration with Orchestrator is shown below.

up.time 5.0 Pricing

For a product that manages a large enterprise deployment of both physical and virtual servers in such a simple and straightforward manner, uptime also sports a uniquely simple and affordable pricing model. Physical Windows Servers are $395 per physical host independent of sockets and cores. Unix and VMware servers are $695 per physical server again independent of CPU sockets and cores.
