On Tuesday 6th April it was announced that Citrix has invested an unspecified amount of money in Kaviza.
Kaviza state that their grid architecture eliminates the expensive infrastructure that VDI solutions – such as Citrix XenDesktop and VMWare View need. With Kaviza’s solution all the functionality needed to provision and manage virtual desktops is consolidated into a single virtual appliance that scales on commodity servers.
Will this announcement herald a major take-up of VDI? Indeed, can you really offer a turnkey solution to support your desktop centralisation strategy?

Both VMware and Citrix, the two clear early leaders in desktop virtualization have built solutions that leverage the infrastructure of server virtualization. However there are a couple of vendors who have come up with a completely different approach. These two vendors, Kaviza, and Sychron use a grid computing approach reminiscent of Citrix Presentation Server (now XenApp) that delivers some interesting benefits, and also comes with some tradeoffs. While server virtualization has largely settled down into a slugfest between VMware (vSphere), Microsoft (Hyper-V) and to a lesser extent Citrix (XenServer), and Red Hat (KVM), the desktop virtualization field remains wide open, and is being targeted by numerous startups with highly creative and appealing solutions. While VMware (View and ThinApp), Microsoft (App-V and MED-V), and Citrix (XenDesktop) certainly represent the large players in the field, startups like Install Free, MokaFive, Virtual Computer, SlickAccess, Unidesk, Kaviza, and Ringcube all bring unique and differentiated solutions to the table.
