News: Parallels Announce Virtuozzo Containers 4.5 for Windows Release Candidate Evaluation Program

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers is the world’s leading OS virtualization solution for Windows and Linux. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers offers levels of density, performance and manageability that are often far higher and cheaper than alternative virtualisation solutions.

Parallels believe that the new Virtuozzo Containers 4.5 for Windows will represent a major step forward in the manageability, performance and efficiency of virtualisation technologies for the enterprise. This new release will a number of new features and enhancements to the industry’s leading OS virtualisation solution, including support for Windows Server 2008.

New features include:

Windows Server 2008 Support: for x32 and x64-bit with or without co-existence with Hyper-V
Windows Server 2008 Role Management
Windows Server 2008 Failover Clustering Support

and enhancements such as

Improved Dynamic Resource Management
Transactional NTFS and Registry in Containers
Enhanced third-party tools list for backup and security support

OS Virtualisation
While Hypervisor Virtualization (such as VMWare’s ESX Server, or Citrix’s XenServer) has a base layer that is loaded directly on the bare server with OS Virtualization, the base is a standard host operating system and with no virtualized hardware interfaces performance can be better than other solutions.

Parallels business automation tools allowing management of virtual environments using a web browser, dynamic resource allocation and live migration have enabled Parallels Containers to be widely adopted by hosting companies to allow their customers access to Cloud services – customers shaing independent server instances offering databases, mail, web and collaboration services on the same physical host.

Oranges are not the only fruit
Organisations are reviewing virtualisation technologies to consolidate server estates in order to reduce costs. There is a tendency in such projects to only consider Hypervisor Virtualization as a solution yet, Virtuozzo Containers’ efficient technology gives its virtual environments the highest density available from a virtualization solution. OS code and resource/cache sharing across virtual environments, templating of OSs and applications are a few of the capabilities that enable hundreds of virtual environments on a standard production physical server.
